PROMOTION & RETENTION POLICY
Grades 9-12
It is the policy of South Carolina Science Academy to ensure students are making adequate progress toward graduation and that educational experiences are appropriate for a student in each grade. Promotion of a student occurs at the conclusion of each academic year upon successful completion of course work and state academic standards. This policy adheres to the South Carolina Education Accountability Act of 1998.
For promotion from 9th to 10th grade, students in their second year of high school must have earned a total of five Carnegie units of credit. One unit must be earned in language arts and one unit must be earned in mathematics.
For promotion from 10th to 11th grade, students in their third year of high school must have earned a total of 11 Carnegie units of credit. Two units must be earned in language arts, two units must be earned in mathematics, and one unit must be earned in science.
For promotion from 11th to 12th grade, students in their fourth year of high school must have earned a total of 16 Carnegie units of credit. Two units must be earned in language arts, two units must be earned in mathematics, one unit must be earned in science, and one unit must be earned in social studies. In addition, the student must currently be enrolled in all courses needed to meet the requirements for a South Carolina high school diploma.
